week after India observed the fifth anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai attacks
in 2008, chief of the Indian Navy, DK Joshi expressed serious concerns
over unregulated armed guards deployed on private merchant ships
crossing Indian waters. Naval chief’s concerns arise out of intelligence
inputs indicating some of the ships having serving and former
“combatants” from the “armed forces” of “certain countries” deployed on
private ships posing as security guards.
The Naval chief fears that with
these ships coming too close to Indian coasts due to change in High Risk
Area (HRA) notification, such unauthenticated armed guards can pose
serious threat to Indian security. India also fears that some of these
private guards can both be spies as well as agents looking for
infiltration to carry out terror attacks in India. Read more
