Swapna breaks the stereotype by being the first transgender to take the Civil Services Examination

Chennai: 23-year-old Swapna, a BCA student from Madurai became the first transgender to take the civil services examination on December 1. Breaking the typecast, Swapna took the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) at Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School on Sunday under the sex category of woman.

Swapna in her interview said that her appearance in the examination is the outcome a protracted fight that she had to wage to appear in the TNPSC exam under the sex of her choice. She feels empowered after being granted a provisional hall ticket on November 28 to give the exams. The decision to grant her a ticket came after the intervention of the Madras High Court.
