India Home To One-Third Of World's Poor People: World Bank Report

India topped the list of the countries with the largest number of poor people. More than one-third of the world's poor people were found in India as per a study conducted by the World Bank.

India was followed by a China, which occupied a distant second spot with home to 13 percent of the world's poor.

The distribution was highly uneven and more than 80 percent of the poor people were found concentrated in ten countries. The top five poorest countries - India (with 33 percent of the world's poor), China (13 percent), Nigeria (7 percent), Bangladesh (6 percent) and the Democratic Republic of Congo (5 percent) - together are home to nearly 760 million of the world’s poor. They were followed by Indonesia, Pakistan, Tanzania, Ethiopia, and Kenya.
