India test-fires nuclear-capable Agni-III missile

Balasore (Odisha): India on Monday successfully test-fired its nuclear-capable Agni-III ballistic missile with a strike range of more than 3,000 km as part of a user trial by the Army from Wheeler Island off Odisha coast."The test-fire conducted by Strategic Force Command (SFC) of the Army was totally successful. Data analyses showed the trial met all parameters," DRDO Spokesman Ravi Kumar Gupta said.The indigeneously developed surface-to-surface missile was flight-tested from a mobile launcher at launch complex-4 of the Integrated Test Range at about 1655 hrs, defence sources said.

Kashmir TALIBANISED: Segregation of male and female students returns to Valley

Srinagar: In a move which may find no takers among liberals, Jammu and Kashmir state government has asked Srinagar’s coaching centres to adhere to draconian guidelines which had been deviced with intention to curb sexual harassment in and around these tuition centers.
Separation of male and female students each of who will be taught in different classrooms at different timings from now on, and banning of mobile phones in coaching centres are among some of these guidelines.

SCHOOLGIRL calls policemen for help, but they rape

Chandigarh: Five Chandigarh policemen have been booked and two of them held for raping, molesting and threatening a minor school going girl for the last two-and-half months. They even threatened her with dire consequences, police said on Thursday.

Quake of mild intensity rocks parts of HP

Shimla: An earthquake of slight intensity on Tuesday night rocked parts of Himachal Pradesh.

The tremors, which were felt at 8.16 pm, lasted few seconds, the India Meteorological Department officials said.

The epicentre of the quake, which measured 3.3 on the Richter scale, was in Kinnaur district of the state.

Kerala HC confirms death sentence on rape-cum-murder case accused

Kochi: Kerala High Court on Tuesday confirmed the death sentence awarded to Govindachamy by a Fast Track Court for brutally raping and causing the death of a 23-year-old woman after pushing her out of a moving train on February 1, 2008.A division bench, comprising justices T Ramachandran Nair and B Kemal Pasha upheld the death sentence awarded by the FTC at Thrissur in November that year, saying "there is absolutely nothing to interfere in this case." The bench also criticised the 'lukewarm' response of Indian Railways and the attitude of fellow passengers of the victim, who was returning home to Shornur from her workplace at Ernakulam, when the incident took place.

Pointing out there is no safety in ladies' compartments. The bench said that even after the incident, the compartment was at the rear end of the train.The judges suggested the ladies compartment be placed in the middle section and two women guards be posted.The bench held that the attitude of the fellow passengers was 'disgustful'. Had they offered a helping hand, this untoward incident could have been avoided.It said there is need to create awareness among the  public to rise to the occasion.Inaction of fellow passengers was more painful than the brutal action of the accused, the judges observed.

Pitched battle for 2014

Kolkata: Former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly has been offered a ticket to contest the general elections next year by the BJP but is undecided on whether to accept the offer.
It is learnt that the offer has come from the BJP's prime ministerial candidate, Narendra Modi, who has promised to make the Bengal sports icon the sports minister in the Cabinet if the party comes to power.

India’s first supersonic jet, MIG-2, to be phased out by IAF on Wednesday

New Delhi: India’s first supersonic jet, the iconic MIG-21 FL  that dealt severe blows to Pakistan Air Force in the 1971 war, will be phased out from the IAF on Wednesday.Though the MIG-21s played a limited role in 1965, they had claimed four Pakistani F-104s, two F-6s, one F-86 Sabre and a Lockheed C-130 Hercules in the 1971 war.

Armed guards on private ships worries India, Navy fears security risk


New Delhi: Almost a week after India  observed the fifth anniversary of 26/11 Mumbai attacks in 2008, chief of the Indian Navy, DK Joshi expressed serious concerns over unregulated armed guards deployed on private merchant ships crossing Indian waters. Naval chief’s concerns arise out of intelligence inputs indicating some of the ships having serving and former “combatants” from the “armed forces” of “certain countries” deployed on private ships posing as security guards.

India test-fires nuclear-capable Prithvi- II missile in Odisha

Balasore (Odisha): India on Tuesday successfully test-fired indigenously developed nuclear-capable Prithvi-II missile with a strike range of 350 km from a test range at Chandipur in Odisha as part of a user trial by defence forces.The surface-to-surface missile was test-fired at around 10:05 AM from a mobile launcher in salvo mode from launch complex-3 of the Integrated Test Range, about 15 km from here, defence sources said.

Swapna breaks the stereotype by being the first transgender to take the Civil Services Examination

Chennai: 23-year-old Swapna, a BCA student from Madurai became the first transgender to take the civil services examination on December 1. Breaking the typecast, Swapna took the Tamil Nadu Public Service Commission (TNPSC) at Nirmala Girls Higher Secondary School on Sunday under the sex category of woman.

Narendra Modi in TIME’s ‘Person of the Year’ poll

New Delhi: International magazine TIME has included BJP’s Prime Ministerial candidate, Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi is among the shortlisted candidates for its 'Person of the Year' title this year. Chidambaram takes on Modi, says rupee value fell under NDA rule

Woman protesting against CM Narendra Modi groped, molested by cops

Ahmedabad: In yet another incident of molestation, a woman activist of Gujarat Parivartan Party (GPP) was allegedly misbehaved by unidentified policemen at Mani nagar area on Saturday.

Supreme Court dismisses plea for repoll if majority exercises NOTA option
